17. The Journal:  due every two weeks, submitted by email
The entries required are not to be lengthy
It is more important that the Intern make an entry for everyday she / he works on the Internship project.

18. Midterm & Final Evaluations:  The intern is to arrange to receive two evaluations from the site of the internship from the supervisor.  One evaluation shall be done about at the midterm of the internship. The other evaluation shall be done at the end to the internship.  Both shall be given to the Professor.  An official record of the Intern's hours worked shall be included & initialed by te supervisor

2. Description: Prerequisite:   permission of instructor:  An intern shall study and work with the University of Virginia at Wise (UVW) and another organization.  The intern shall perform tasks as determined by UVW and the organization such as study appropriate material, observe and participate in the organization, keep a journal, write an analytic, reflective term paper, and so on. Offered on an individual basis with approval of the instructor.

3. Objectives: The Intern shall:
  1. gain real work experience
  2. gain expertise in a chosen occupation
  3. exhibit field work research skills
  4. exhibit academic research skills
  5. apply field and academic research to a real work experience
  6. demonstrate their capacity for independent action and thinking, in a prudent manner

4.  Format & Internship Form:  See the Internship Form, for the responsibilities of the Intern, the Supervisor & the Professor, and the Internship Agreement form, which all participants must sign.
This form must be filled out before the student can register for the course. 
The Intern shall complete the following assignments, described below.
  - Internship Agreement Form 
  - Journal to be turned in every two weeks
  - Draft Proposal 
  - Midterm Evaluation
  - Final Evaluation
  - Term Paper
  - Presentation

5. Books & materials:  To be agreed upon by the Intern & the Professor, and to be referenced in the Term Paper Bibliography and cited within the text of the Term Paper.  The Term Paper is to be a discussion of what the intern experiences / learns in the field seeting, the agreed upon book, & other sociological & psychological knowledge that the intern can bring to bear from her / his education to date.

6.  Evaluation The student will be graded on each of the projects listed in the Assignment Weighting section below.  Organization refers to how well the Intern works with the Supervisor and the Professor to complete assigned obligations.

The Draft Proposal forms the Intern's ideas for a Term Paper

The Draft Proposal should describe how the Intern will utilize the Types of Analysis as described on the Term Paper Webpage

It is required that the Intern write a Descriptive Analysis the Intern's experience, a Narrative Analysis of the Intern's  experience, & a Comparative analysis comparing the Intern's experince w/ a book agreed upon by the Intern & the Professor.

The Intern may also choose to write a socio-historical analysis or other types of analysis.

The Term Paper is to be a discussion of what the intern experiences / learns in the field seting, the agreed upon book, & other sociological & psychological knowledge that the intern can bring to bear from her / his education to date.  The Term Paper Link describes a possible outline.  It is generally suggested that the student focus on 
   - a descriptive analysis
   - a comparative analysis which compares the experiences of the intern w/ the agreed upon book, 
      w/ the other knowledge that the intern can bring to bear from her / his education to date 
   - or a socio-historical analysis
But other types of analyses may be used
