  NOTE:  The Internship Agreement Form, below, must be filled out before the student can register for the course.  
  The Agreement:  The Intern, the Supervisor of the Intern & the Professor shall read & agree to the following responsibilities & will fill out the Internship Form at the end of this document.

General Responsibilities of the Intern
  1. The Student will work or volunteer as an Intern in an organization, institution, business, government agency, etc. 
  2. The Intern will work or volunteer for 2.66 hours per week for fifteen weeks to earn one credit hour at UVaW (i.e., eight hours per week for fifteen weeks for three credit hours or sixteen hours per week for six credit hours), or an equivalency. 
  3. The Intern will earn no other credit from an academic institution for this internship. 
  4. Interns are expected to conduct an independent study (reading, discussing, photocopying, note taking, etc.) on a topic agreed on by the intern and Prof. Withen.  (Topic should be agreed on by the fifth week of the internship)
  5. Prof. Withen will provide instruction and direction to the Intern.
  6. Interns are expected to conduct field work:  interview, survey, compile data, observe, participate, etc.
  7. Interns are expected to regularly attend & actively participate/lead meetings with Prof. Withen. 
  8. Interns are expected to compile a report/ term paper (three pages per credit hour with one academic resource for each page).  See the section on the term paper below. 
  9. Interns are expected to keep a journal of their activities, and sociological reflections (i.e., self-critique, general critique of the process, conflicts, joys, etc.).  The journal must be turned in at two week intervals. 
  10. Interns are expected to keep a calendar of their hours which will be signed by their supervisor. 
  11. Interns will be evaluated by Prof. Withen and an organizational representative on completion of these tasks.  The grade for the course will be determined by Prof. Withen.

  12. Interns are to give a presentation of findings to the Social Science Student Seminar Series or an equivalency.

General Responsibilities of the Supervisor
  1. Provide a valuable & learning experience for the intern in the agreed upon manner.
  2. Provide ordinary oversight for the intern in his or her position. 
  3. Sign off on interns hours.  For example, the supervisor can sign the intern's time sheet or simply write a note stating, "To the best of my knowledge, Doe has worked the following hours." 
  4. Provide two employee evaluations.  If at all possible the regular evaluative procedure used in the organization will be used, and shared with the intern and Prof. Withen.  Evaluations should be given mid-term through the internship, and at the end of the internship.  If such a procedure is not in operation, Prof. Withen will provide an evaluation to be filled out by the supervisor and shared with the intern and Prof. Withen.

General Responsibilities of the Professor
  1. The Professor has sole responsibility for marking a grade.
  2. Meet with the intern as needed to make the intern experience a scholastic experience.
  3. Meet with the intern to determine readings and the topic to be studied and written on.
  4. Meet with the intern to give feedback on the Intern's course assignments including the proposals, the term paper, and the presentation.
