The Late Policy:  If you are absent and want to make-up the work, or want to be excused for a project, you must attach a documented excuse to the Make-up Form. (Return to the main syllabus & see the Links for Make-ups & Make-up Form, if you have not already done so.)      If you are uncertain as to whether something will be excused or not, ask me.  Some situations are discussed below.  Several methods of documenting an excuse are acceptable. For medical absences, I need a clinic or doctor's excuse.
For court, car and other types of inevitable encounters, please provide some type of official, dated documentation such as a court receipt, a mechanics receipt, etc.  Leaving early or coming back late from Break or the weekend, etc. is not excused.  If you come in after role is taken or if you leave early, you are counted absent.
If you have family or personal issues that keep you from class, or some type of issue that you cannot get documentation on, then you may see Elizabeth Steele in the Advising, Retention and Assessment Office.  At her discretion, she will provide an excuse.  Ms. Steele and the Advising, Retention and Assessment Office are located in 235 Smiddy, phone 328-0313.
College Policy:  (The UVW Catalogue)  “Each student is expected to attend promptly all the classes and laboratories for which she or he is registered.  Excessive absences may result in disciplinary action by the Dean of the Faculty [ Dr. Amelia Harris].
A student who is absent because of serious illness or death in his or her immediate family or for any officially authorized reason may be excused by the Associate Provost for Educational Support Services.  Professors have an obligation to allow students to make up work missed because of absences which are officially excused by the Associate Provost.
A student who attends fewer than 50% of the lectures or laboratories in a course is not eligible for credit for that course.  Individual instructors may establish more stringent attendance policies.”

12.  Make-ups:   The following make-up policy is implemented in accordance with the college policy listed above in the Late Policy section of the syllabus.  All course requirements must be turned in at the beginning of class time.  I will not accept anything turned in to me or my office;  too many things get lost in the paper blizzard.  Participants (not spectators) in College activities such as athletes, actors, etc.are not docked for absence due to their participation.  Please inform me with a list of when you expect to be gone.  Only documented medical excuses, judicial duties (for example, court appearances), or deaths in the family are accepted.  These absences may be excused by bringing documentation or by approaching the Advising, Retention & Assessment Office headed by Elizabeth Steele  (see the Late Policy Link in the main syllabus). You are allowed one unexcused absence for class projects, discussion leadership, quizzes, etc.  After that, unexcused in-class projects, discussion leadership, quizzes, etc. earn a 0% and may not be made up.  Excused class projects are not averaged into your grade and so neither count for or against you.  All other course requirements earn a zero, if not made up.  If you are absent for a project, you must turn in a Make-Up Form attaching the excuse from the Provost, Advising, Retention & Assessment Office, Doctor, court, mechanic, etc.   (see the Make-up Form Link in the main syllabus) (see the Late Policy Link in the main syllabus).  Make-Up Forms must be turned in before exams in order to receive credit for any missed work prior to that exam.  That is to say, turn in the Make-Up forms as soon as you return to class or you will not receive credit.
Made-up material such as term-papers, etc., must be done within a week of returning to class. To make-up or turn-in late material, you must fill out a Make-Up Form, attaching the excuse from the  Provost, Advising, Retention & Assessment Office, Doctor, court, mechanic, etc.  (see the Make-up Form Link in the main syllabus) (see the Late Policy  Link in the main syllabus).
Missed exams, quizzes etc. may be made up with the next exam.  You must present a make-up form to the professor, prior to taking the make-up in order to schedule it.. All unexcused tests, etc., are docked 8 percentage points.
