An Outline is an ordered listing of the topics covered in the project |
& McCuen, 1979 |
An outline will help prevent
- needless straying from the pt - or overdev one topic, while skimping on another - confusing ordering of pts |
For most outlines, there should bea minimum
of 3 levels, ie
1. first level 1.1. second level 1.1.1 third level 1.1.1.1. fourth level 1.1.1.1.1. fifth level 1.1.1.1.1.1 sixth level Obviously, there may be many other levels, but it is not recommended going beyond 6 levels. |
The first levels should cover the major sections of the assignment by Topic, and/or by Types of Analyses |
The Logical Conventions of the Outline is that levels move from the general to the specific |
Higher levels of the outline make general points |
Lower levess make points which support the general point |
The idea of any writing is to make assertions that are supported by concrete examples & specific details. If you have ideas that are not supported, an outline will make this painfully clear |
In an outline, every category should be subdivided at least once |
The most detailed and comprehensive part of the outline is in the body of the paper |
In the body, in the social sciences, one may use either the topic outline or types of analysis outline |
The parallelism in an outline can be covered in either a topic outline, a type of analysis outline, or a combination of both |
In the outline per se, use similar grammatical form in the Outline
Proper
1.1. Uses of socialization in the family 1.1. For gender identification 1.2. For value foundation 1.3. For control |
Improper
1. Uses of socialization in the family 1.1. Gender identification 1.2. For value foundation 1.3. To help society control individuals |
For most projects in the social sciences ( oral, written, etc ), the highest level of ranking should be the major parts of a research paper |
