- An Overview of the Term Paper |

- Research Design |
- Project: Writing the Thesis: Topic & Subtopics |
- Project: Refine the Thesis: add Types of Analysis |
The Formulation of the Thesis narrows the Topic so that a Type of Analysis can be applied to establish Research Objectives |
The thesis statement must meet three requirements: |
1. The Thesis should clearly state the Topic |
In developing this part of the thesis, pick a one word topic and then develop it into a short phrase |
Example:
Single word: work Short phrase: safety at work |
2. The Thesis should specify or narrow the Topic |
The thesis must narrow the topic down to a level that is manageable in the assignment. |
Many times a topic is too broad
to be successfully covered in the space allowed,
so one must take care to sufficiently narrow the topic. |
On the other hand, occasionally
a person has to re-direct a topic
because they either cannot find enough information on it, or they find themselves lapsing into an analysis of parallel topics. |
In this case, the thesis is re-directed to one of the parallel topics, which becomes the main topic. |
Example:
Safety at work is much to broad Possible directions to narrow the topic: - Technological innovations for safety - Social factors affecting safety - Safety in wildland firefighting, etc. |
3. The Thesis should indicate the direction of the topic,
i.e., the Types of Analysis used in conjunction w/ the Topic |
The thesis should indicate the direction of the sociological analysis. |
It is possible for a thesis to suggest any combination of the Types of Analysis discussed earlier. |

Thesis Examples: |
This paper examines the causes and effects
of safety for wildland firefighters
by exploring the socio-historical development of safety in the workplace and addressing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to current safety initiatives, and advocates that safety could be enhanced by allowing lower level firefighters greater authority in the workplace. |

NOTE: This thesis embodies four of the Types of Analysis. Can you find them? |
The body of the paper should either be focused
on these types of analysis,
or utilize more of them. |
The following report examines the socio-historical
development of the bureaucratic organization,
its' effects and problems today, and finally offers suggestions to address any weaknesses, threats, or problems found. |
