- Anaximander's argument applies, not just to the theory of Thales, but to any theory like Thales which asserts any specific element to be the first principle of all other elements or substances. If the principle of all things cannot be something definite, then it must be something indefinite. Thus Anaximander makes the Indefinite (to apeiron) the originative substance.
