• While in Christendom, philosophy was generally treated as the “handmaiden of theology,” it had a relatively independent status in Islam, especially in the East.

• There was a stronger tradition of intellectualism and of freedom of thought in Islam.

• Philosophy remained closer to logic, mathematics, and science.
