- The formative period of Islamic philosophy begins in Baghdad’s House of Wisdom during the late 8th century.
- The principle figure is al-Kindi. He commissioned numerous translations of Greek texts into Arabic, and developed his own philosophical position out of a synthesis of Platonic, neo-Platonic and Aristotelian sources.
- He also applied philosophical methods to several of the theological debates within Islam.
