A Transition is a statement or a set of statements that connects major sections of a written or oral assignment. The purpose of the transition is to tie parts of the assignment together so that the audience knows where the logic of the argument is headed.  A transition should help organize the assignment.

Use transitions often to connect different parts of your writing or speaking assignment.  Use transitions whenever the assignment changes the direction of the topic (between subsections) or whenever the assignment needs clarification as to why a particular idea is now being discussed.  This is true for both written assignments and for oral presentations.  Generally because proposals are brief statements of the intention for a larger project, they do not include many transitions.
