- Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius , born of a prominent Roman family and perhaps educated in Athens, served as consul and principal minister to Theodoric the Ostrogoth, King of Italy from 493 to 526. Falling out of favor with the king, he was exiled, imprisoned, and executed.
- His On the Consolation of Philosophy was written during his year of imprisonment.
