• There are five ways in which something can be affirmatively attributed to a subject.
  • The first is by definition. This yields only a tautology, giving the meaning ascribed to a name.
  • The second is by partial definition. This assumes the subject defined is a compound.
  • The third is by attributing an accident to the subject.
