Avicenna on the soul

• He combines Aristotle’s analysis of soul with the neo-Platonic doctrine of emanation.

• A mixture of elements under the powers of heavenly bodies produces plants, which embody the vegetative soul.

• The animal soul goes beyond the vegetative soul in so far as it perceives individuals and moves of its own volition.
