The academic year component
focuses on tutorial services to support the student's college preparatory
curriculum. The tutorial program consists of three phases. The first phase
is two tutorial sessions, satellite and on-site, that meet for two hours
in the mornings on the first and third Saturdays of each month, from September
through May. Satellite is strictly academic tutoring in two area locations
throughout the target area: The University of Virginia's College at Wise and the Clintwood Public Library in Clintwood. These centers are centrally located to ease
the burden of parents and students having to travel long distances for
the tutorials. The on-site tutorial, located on campus, provides academic
tutorials, a counseling component and an enrichment activity.
Phase two is the counseling that take place at the schools. The Counselor visits each participant at his/her school one day per month. The purpose of this meeting is for academic tutoring, personal and career development, and encouragement. The third phase of Upward Bound is the summer residential component. During the summer, Upward Bound offers an intensive six-week residential program designed to give participants a taste of "college life". Students stay on campus where they attend classes, academic and career counseling sessions, and recreational and social activities. At the end of the summer program, students attend the summer trip to places of interest such as New York City, Florida, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. |
