Professional Involvement

     Ms. Miller's focus is in the area of law and criminal justice.  Her teaching responsibilities include American national politics and political institutions, constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, introduction to criminal justice,  judicial process, civil liberties and rights, organized and white-collar crime, public administration, public personnel administration, public financial administration, and a senior seminar in violence.  Shirley  is also coordinating internships for the administration of justice program this semester with Wise County's District Attorney's Office, state probation offices located in Wise, Lee, and Dickenson Counties, federal probation office located in Big Stone Gap, the Wise County Sheriff's Department, and the City of Norton's Police Department.

     As one of the faculty advisors for the Administration of Justice Club, Shirley enjoys motivating students to excel in both written and physical competition. This year five students attended the LAE regional competition held at Radford University, Radford, Virginia.  The AJ Club is working hard to raise funds to attend the national conference to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, in March 1999.
Professor Miller's research interests include ethical issues in decision-making exhibited by law enforcement personnel in carrying out responsibilities of their jobs.  Another area of research that Ms. Miller is concluding is an examination of job-satisfaction as experienced by Bermuda police officers.  Bermuda, seen as an island paradise, offers a unique perspective to the field of policing which has not been previously explored.

     As an area of professional development, Ms. Miller as been active in presenting new research at national conferences.  Her presentations include the following: Epstein, J., & Miller, S. J.  (1995, November).  A pilot study:  Exploration of fear of crime among elderly females in a nursing home environment.   Paper presented at the American Society of Criminology, Boston, MA; and,  Miller, S. J., Blankenship, M., & Luginbuhl, J.  (1995, March).  Improving juror comprehension of sentencing instructions in death penalty cases.  Paper presented at the meeting of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, Boston, MA.

     In addition, Shirley has served as Managing Editor (1993-1995) for the American Journal of Criminal Justice.
