Supporting Material
The 18th-century newspaper advertisements for runaway
servants and slaves form the bulk of the material on which this project
is based. In order fully to explore the lives of the runaways, however,
other material will be added to the site. Court records, plantation accounts,
letters, diaries, and personal papers of planters, and other material from
the newspapers can help us illuminate the lives of the runaways as individuals.
For example, what happened to the runaways? For the
vast majority of the individuals we simply do not know. For some, however,
court records can offer clues to their ultimate fate. Looking at planters'
diaries can provide information about other runaways. And letters and other
personal papers also occasionally make reference to runaway slaves or servants.
