RAY STRATTON

To The Reader:

This is a letter of introduction to all interested parties. I am currently teaching full time at UVA's College at Wise, a small liberal arts college in southwest Virginia. The art program here is relatively new and I have become very involved with the development of the curriculum and the implementation of new programs.

I have been working as an artist, primarily in the area of printmaking for over fifteen years. Since arriving here I have set up a printmaking program with special emphasis on non toxic techniques, before coming here I created a similar program at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno Nevada. I have also helped create a digital media program here. The first semester was team taught in the fall and concentrated on how the computer could be used to enhance traditional studio media, (as opposed to replacing it). In addition, I have been teaching foundation level courses (2D, 3D, Color theory, Drawing, Painting and Photography) to art majors, graphic design majors and non-art majors for over six years.

I am honored to have received my MFA from the Glasgow School of Art at the beginning of the new artistic "boom" which has given rise to many of the new young British artists. The work that began developing there has been involved in pushing the boundaries of printmaking and what is considered to be a print. This includes the combination of printmaking with other media including (but not limited to) photography and computers, as well as getting past what might be seen as the limitations of framing, matting and editioning; by moving the print into the realm of installations, three dimensions and other non-traditional areas. My primary studio emphasis is in intaglio with a strong background in other print media, photography and digital imaging. My experience also covers artists' books, papermaking and site-specific installational work.

Links are available to my Curriculum Vitae which outlines in more detail my experience to date.

Thank you for your interest and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Ray Stratton
