RE: Student Research Symposium Memo
To: All faculty:
Below is the announcement about the Student Research Symposium. If you remember, we hosted it here last year. Emory and Henry is hosting it this year. Chris Qualls, Emory and Henry’s dean, has put together the announcement this year for both of our institutions. Please note the date for submissions and the fact that submissions should be E-mailed directly to E & H. The address is below. I hope you will encourage students to submit proposals. We were very pleased with both the number and quality of those submitted last year. We’ve included some sample abstracts as models. Thanks.
Best,
Amelia Harris
Dear Friends,
Together with UVA-Wise, we will host the second annual
Research Symposium on Thursday, April 3rd with this year’s event to be
held on the E&H campus. Last year’s event was a big success with
approximately forty students participating. I would like for you
to encourage your students to participate in this year’s symposium by submitting
a presentation proposal. The symposium is designed to have concurrent
sessions with papers and posters to be presented from various disciplines.
Even if your students are planning to present their research at other venues,
I would ask that you invite them to submit proposals for the Research Symposium
as this will sharpen their presentation skills and strengthen their curriculum
vitas.
Presentation proposals should be emailed to mailto:submissions@ehc.edu by Wednesday, March 5 (acceptance notifications will be made by March 19th). Submissions should consist of a 300-350 word abstract with title (along with a shorter one paragraph description of the project for publicity purposes), a 2-3 line biographical sketch (major; class year, hometown, career aspirations, etc.), and a digital photo of the researchers. Also, please have your students state their format preference (paper, poster, or either). The Symposium will start at 1 PM with paper presentations to be allotted approximately 12 minutes and poster presentations to be presented at the intermission between the two concurrent paper sessions. Specific presentation times will be sent to the researchers along with the notification of acceptance. I’ve enclosed a copy of last year’s brochure and a sample abstract for your reference (the sample abstract is for a psychology proposal; proposals from other disciplines may written in a style typical for that discipline).
Once again, please encourage your students working on research projects to submit a proposal for consideration. I would like an excellent participation rate again this year. Please email me with any questions you might have.
