Have one entry for each day of activity, either work or research |
The journal must be typed & emailed to the Professor as often as indicated on the main syllabus |
Date each entry |
Give a brief overview of your activities related to the project for
the day
Describe the core process of your project, whether it is an internship or a research project. Focus on the most central happenings in your setting. |
Then try and see what is not central.
Give that some journal space too. Do the two relate? Record significant events. Significance in that it relates to your topic or thesis, or that it is simply unusual for you or for others in the setting. |
Include your hours, where you went, what you did
You may use pseudonyms to protect privacy, where appropriate, but wherever possible, use real names |
The true aim of a journal in this academic process is to become your research record. The journal should also become a narrative so that a person reading it would understand fairly clearly what it is you do in this setting. |
Start the Research Journal as soon as you begin the planning / writing of your analysis design |
You may want to keep a notebook w/ you at all times, but you should set a time each day to sit at the computer & record the days activities so that they can be emailed to the Professor at intervals specified in the syllabus |
The Research Journal has 3 parts: | blank | |||
1. Record ideas, brain-storms, etc. so you do not forget them |
2. Keep a separate section: Concerns, Contradictions & Anomalies |
This section should keep a record of any & all weaknesses that you encounter in your research |
Darwin was one of the 1st to realize that we tend
to forget disconfirming evidence,
thus he kept such a journal |
3. Keep a Field Research Activities Section |
In this section record every major event in the collection of your data |
How much time you spend each day giving surveys, interviews, etc. |
Make it an official document: 2 hrs. on Sat. in Clintwood for 2 surveys (includes 1 hr. driving) |
Record any problems w/ data collection in the Concerns, Contradictions & Anomalies Section |
