Unjust
Gender Stratification in Traditional Societies
Gender has been a significant basis for discrimination,
bias, & thus has resulted in unjust inequality in the past. This
problem is now somewhat less in the developed nations, but admittedly we
still have a ways to go. However, in some countries around the world,
patriarchy, discrimination & gross exploitation & oppression of
women is still all too common.
1. If you have heard of oppression based on gender,
share those stories w/ us.
2. Given that the situation of women is the 'right'
of these nations, should the developed nations interfere & try to change
this?
3. How can patriarchal societies be educated / socialized
/ changed to reduce or eliminate this situation?
4. Many development agencies, public & private, work
in many of these developing nations where patriarchy exists. These
agencies provide different resources to women, such as education, micro
loans (eg investment capital), sex ed, birth control, childcare, training,
driving lessons, & more. When women acquire these resources,
this disrupts the society & many traditionalists in those societies
(men & women) oppose such aid. What do you think? Which
resources should or should not be provided?
