Master & Commander: Decision Making
1. Cpt. Jack Aubrey's Admiralty Orders were to 'Intercept
French Privateer Acheron en route to the Pacific, intent on carrying the
war into those waters... Sink, burn or take her a prize.' Although
ultimately successful, what could have sacrificed the mission?
2. Cpt Aubrey decides to continue pursuit of the
Acheron after being badly damaged in battle. Use various decision
making models to critique this decision.
3. Do you believe that orders / decisions should
be followed no matter what the cost? Discuss.
4. Cpt. Aubrey breaks his promise to Dr. Stephen
Maturin, Surgeon, about docking at Galapagos Island. Jack retorts
that his decisions are subject to the requirements of the service.
Dr. Maturin alleges a corruption of power? Do you agree or disagree
w/ this allegation? Defend your position.
5. Does Cpt. Aubrey develop contingencies &
consider consequences w/ regard to his plan for capturing the Acheron?
What contingencies should be available to organizational member when embarking
on a risky endeavor?
