Project:  Public Punishment

Durkheim holds that public punishment is functional for society because it builds an in-group of law abiding citizens & it builds solidarity among this group.

Below are several policies to implement Durkheim's ideas on punishment.  Indicate which ones you agree or disagree with and why.

1.  Public humiliation punishment for minor crimes:  the posting pictures & explanations in public places & on the internet 

2.  Public humiliation punishment for minor crimes:  wearing an symbol of the crime:  one for thievery, one for assault, etc.

3.  Public humiliation punishment for minor crimes:  the stocks or chaining in public

4.  Public humiliation punishment for serious crimes:  caining

5.  Public humiliation punishment for serious crimes:  whipping

6.  Public humiliation punishment for extreme crimes:  public execution open only to the public, i.e. no media

7.  Public humiliation punishment for extreme crimes:  public execution open to the public & displayed in the media, i.e. on the internet & TV
