history of mining, the participants in mining, mining issues, & if
you wish your own experience or knowledge of mining. Put this info
together & offer a solution or even just an improvement in mining.
Finally explain if you think mining will improve for the people of SW Va,

3. DB 3: Forestry: Discuss the physical/envl problems associated
with forestry today. Prioritize them as to which you think are the
most important & explain why. |

4. DB 4: Envl Participants: Comment on any of the following:
What is the relationship between the rights of the inorganic Earth, plants
and animals, on the one hand, and human rights to utilize those resources,
on the other hand? How are these rights different for the various interest
groups? You should specifically look at industry, government regulatory
agencies, environmentalists, recreationists, and a number of groups within
the general population. Have these rights changed over time?
If so, how? Is this relationship (between the rights of the Earth,
plants, and animals), in your opinion, balanced? Why or why not?
Would you make any recommendations for change? |

5. DB 5: The Env, Science, & Knowledge: Discuss
why those dealing w/ environmental issues should be concerned w/ epistemology.
In your discussion, look at the issues of epistemology and the environment
from the point of view of three or four of the major participants in the
environmental debate. How might each participant gain or lose from
dealing w/ or ignoring a critique of science, the politicization of science,
the ways of understanding, culture, attitudes, opinions, interests, ideology,
and so on.
That is to say, is being ignorant of the issues an advantage?
Is being knowledgeable an advantage? Why?
This question can be addressed by answering some or any of the following:

5. How can one or two participants in the envl debate gain or
lose from dealing w/ or ignoring attitudes, opinions, interests, ideology?
6. How can one or two participants in the envl debate gain or
lose from dealing w/ or ignoring or other factors in epistemology? |

6. DB 6: Political Process & Envlism: What are
the three most important envl laws? What is the most
important law in each of the areas of envl law? What law or
set of laws would you suggest to deal w/ global warming or any other environmental
issue? You can also suggest the repeal or modification of a
law. |

7. DB 7: Policy Analysis & SIA: 1. Briefly
describe an environmental project that you would like to analyze such as
a road going in on the edge of town, a new subdivision, a logging sale,
a mine, etc. 2. Does it need mitigation? Why or
why not? 3. How would you directly reduce the effects of the
action? 4. How would you indirectly reduce the effects
of the action? 5. What trade-offs or substitutions would
you make? 6. How would you monitor the mitigation?
7. Would the proposed mitigations make the action more attractive
to stakeholders? Who & how? |

8. DB 8: Control of the Env, Nature, & Land:
Conduct a brief SWOT Analysis of Tourism w/ reference to the local env,
the local culture, & econ development (esp. w/ reference to econ transitions)
Specify where your tourism is taking place; ie from Appalachia to Washington
state. 1. What strengths are there to the dev of tourism
w/ ref to the env, cul, & the econ? 2. What weaknesses
are there to the dev of tourism w/ ref to the env, cul, & the econ?
3. What opportunities are there to the dev of tourism w/ ref to the
env, cul, & the econ? 4. What threats are there to
the dev of tourism w/ ref to the env, cul, & the econ? |

9. DB 9: Envl Economics: Often, it all comes down
to money. Discuss how much you currently feel we are currently giving
up for the environment: ie:
A. way too much B. a lot C. just
right D. a little E. way too little
Justify your sentiments: 'we are killing too many jobs'
to 'we are killing too many species' etc. etc. etc. |

for this one. I will not penalize anyone for disagreeing.
