A Message from the President:

Since its inception in 1982, the Poor Farm Society has operated entirely on monies received through the generosity of its members, as there are no dues, as such.  From time to time those of us who currently serve as managers are asked about the source of our funding, what ongoing and special projects we undertake and the amount of money we need to meet the costs of those projects.  It is hoped that the following information will serve both to address those questions and to remind some of us who have the best of intentions but reluctant memories not to forget to  include the Society in our annual giving.

We are presently funding a total of eighteen modest scholarships to students at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.  The scholarships, in the amount of $150 each, are given in honor of or in memory of retired or deceased faculty and staff who had long terms of service and who made significant contributions to the life of the College.  As the College grows and matures we expect this commitment to increase as other worthy persons join the ranks of the retirees.  We also hope that the amount of each scholarship gradually can be increased, as well.

The Society also pitches in on occasion when special needs arise that the College can not otherwise meet.Among other things, we have in the past helped to provide the costs of billboard advertising, purchased a new flag, and provided the mace which is carried in academic ceremonies.

There are, of course, the cost of postage and printing and the cost of our annual Harvest Dinner in November.  Additionally, we must keep enough in reserve at any time to allow us to assist when there arise unexpected projects which are especially worthy of our support.

Altogether, to maintain our current commitments we anticipate needing an annual contribution of about $6000 from our members.  Each of us is encouraged to contribute as much as we can afford so that the good work envisioned by our founder, Buck Henson, can be continued.
