NEWS OF POOR FARMERS
  •      Poor Farm members honored in 2001 with Alumni Awards are:
          Ron Flanary, Outstanding Alumni Award
                Stanley Willis, Distinguished Service Award
                Joseph C. Smiddy, Meritorious Achievement Award
  •     Richard  Davidson was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame

  •   Don Pippin has been appointed by Gov. Mark Warner to the          Board of        Visitors of the University of Virginia.
  • Among the new members on the UVA-Wise  Board are: Jack Kennedy and Ed Roop.  Ed is Alumni Association President this year.
  • Poor Farmers are active in the Highland Cavalier Club.  George Culbertson, recently retired, is president, Brian Wills is vice president, Steve Lawson is treasurer, and Bob Colyer is the club's representative on the Foundation Board.
  • Lelia Maude Richmond, who died April 10, was honored at the season's first home football game when the playing field was named the "Beaty Richmnond Field".  The first home game of each season will be dedicated to Mrs. Richmond, known widely as the Cavaliers' No. 1 Fan.
  • The press box at Carl Smith Stadium hasbeen named for Bill Ramseyer, architect of the college's football program and head football coach from 1991 until his retirement last spring.
  • Dr. Brownie Polly was one of four community leaders honored at the 2001 Wellmont Foundation Three-Star Gala.  He was recognized for raising funds which helped build Lonesome Pine Hospital nearly thirty years ago.
  • Dr. J. P. Senter, a family physician who has practiced in Clintwood since 1981, was honored last fall for 20  years membership in the American Academy of Family  Physicians, and for his involvement inthe community.
  • Joe and Frances Howard moved to Florida in early summer, and are missed.  Joe and Jami Wolfe purchased the Howard's house in Norton.
  • Rachel Lewis, daughter of Charlotte Parsons and the late Judd Lewis, served a summer internship in Washington, D.C. , in the offices of Sen. Hillary R. Clinton and Congressman Rick Boucher.  Rachel is a senior, majoring in public policy at the College of William and Mary.
  • In addition to her accreditation work, Betty Johnson has recently traveled to China and Scandinavia.
