Protagoras (d. 421)

• Some sophists, particularly Protagoras were highly respected for their philosophical accomplishments.

• The sophist sought to distinguish between physis, or nature, and nomos, or convention.

• Claiming all reality which could be known was nomos, Protagoras declared "man is the measure of all things."
