Ancient & Medieval Philosophy -- David L. Rouse
- The sophists addressed large audiences. Socrates engaged in dialog with small groups, often in the agora or marketplace.
- Plato’s Apology presents Socrates defense before the Athenian assembly. He has been charged with impiety and corrupting the youth.
- He will not defend himself “in a set oration duly ornamented with words and phrases.” Truth, rather than persuasion, will be his goal.
