Ancient & Medieval Philosophy -- David L. Rouse
- As a young man, he was interested in natural philosophy, and was associated with the position of Anaxagoras.
- He later abandoned the pursuit of natural philosophy for ethics and logic.
- That interest led some to identify him with the sophists, who claimed that their teaching could create excellence (arete) in their students.
- The sophists, however, were also democrats. Socrates, and his disciple, Plato, were anti-democratic.
