Ancient & Medieval Philosophy -- David L. Rouse
- Porphyry was born in Tyre. His parents were Syrian. He first studied philosophy in Athens, then joined the school of Plotinus in Rome, where he remained after Plotinus' death.
- Like many of the neo-Platonists, he held that the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle were reconcilable.
- His Isagoge, a commentary on Aristotle's Categories, is extremely important to early and middle medieval philosophy.
- He was well known for his opposition to Christianity.
