- Galen was a major influence in medicine until the middle of the 17th century.
- He was personal physician to emperors of Rome, including Marcus Aurelius.
- He engaged in extensive dissection and vivisection of animals. He sometimes misapplied his learning to humans, for dissection of corpses was prohibited.
