• The soils of Attica, the region of Athens, were very thin, unable to produce good grain crops.

• The soils of Sicily, however, produced abundant grain.

• In 416, the city state of Segesta asked Athens to aid it in a dispute it was having with Selinus. Selinus was allied with Syracuse, the most powerful city state of Sicily.
