- Though vastly outnumbered, the Athenians engaged the Persians on the plain of Marathon, and defeated them.
- A Greek soldier ran the 26 miles back to Athens to announce the victory, then dropped dead of exhaustion. We still celebrate his feat with the marathon race.
- Darius son, Xerxes, continued the effort to conquer Greece, but was eventually defeated by the Athenian navy. Athens continued the war against Persia until the Ionian states had been freed from Persian rule.
