- Aristotle’s metaphysics is a hylemorphism. That is, he holds that substance is a composite of form and matter.
- Form determines what a thing is, its whatness or quiddity.
- Matter individuates a thing; it is is thisness or haecity.
- No universal term can name a substance in the primary sense since universals can be predicated of many things.
