• In working out his own solution to the problem of universals, Abelard begins with the questions raised by Boethius’ commentary on Porphory’s Isagoge.

• Boethius raised three questions.
  • Do genera and species really exist or are they simply something in the mind?
  • Granting they do exist, are they corporeal or incorporeal?
  • Do they exist apart from sensible things or only in them?
