Dr. O'Quinn primary interests include teaching and research. In her classes in Gender Studies, Cultural Diversity, and Theories of Learning, Dr. O'Quinn engages students in field based learning activities. For example, in her Appalachian Seminar, students are interviewing three generations of coal miners from a coal camp called "Clinchco." Students present findings at a regional conference.
Dr. O'Quinn designs her classes in ways that provide students the opportunity to lead and think on their feet. In her Cultural Diversity class, students travel to New York City to take slides of graffiti. Once back at the College, they use content analysis procedures to explain what graffiti artists are communicating about their culture. In Statistics, RM, and Ex4, Dr. O'Quinn engages learners in problem solving and in explaining concepts in their own words. Study groups meet weekly and require learners to discuss statistical and research concepts.
