Professor Sheldon's primary scholarly interests are in Early American Political Thought. His book, The Political Philosophy of Thomas Jefferson (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1991) became the first American book on Jefferson to be translated into Russian and published in Moscow (Respublika Press, 1996). He is completing a study entitled The Political Philosophy of James Madison (Johns Hopkins University Press) and recently released What Would Jefferson Say? (Penguin). He has presented numerous conference papers and lectured on Jefferson at Moscow University and Oxford University. Textbooks authored by Professor Sheldon include The History of Political Theory (Peter Lang, 1988) and Religion and Politics (Peter Lang, 1990). Forthcoming are Religion and Political Culture in Jefferson's Virginia (with Daniel Dreisbach, Rowan and Littlefield) and The Political Thought of John Taylor. Sheldon also edits the book series Major concepts in Politics and Political Theory for Peter Lang Publishing (New York, Berne, Paris, Berlin). In 1992, Sheldon received The Outstanding Faculty in Virginia Award. He is working with scholars at the University of Istanbul, Marmara University, and Bosphorus University on an English/Turkish edition of a study comparing Thomas Jefferson and Kemal Ataturk (Jefferson and Ataturk: Political Philosophies). Dr. Sheldon is author of the Christian novel What Would Jesus Do?
which is part of the "WWJD" movement.
