AREMS Newsletter Spring 1999 ISSUE March 1999

An Evening with Walter McCrone

After more than a year without a formal meeting, AREMS begins 1999 by meeting at USCS (University of South Carolina Spartanburg) on Thursday and Friday 18 and 19 March. Dr. Jeanne Kowalczyk will be our campus host for the Thursday afternoon workshops and Friday technical presentations. Dr. Walter McCrone will be our featured banquet speaker, and he will present a truly stimulating paper on viagra at our Friday session. Our workshops will cover infrared microscopy, micro thermal analysis by AFM, and video microscopy. The workshop format will be very flexible to allow everyone an opportunity to attend more than one workshop. In addition, several light microscope vendors have offered to set-up equipment for our members to see, touch, and experience. So, if you have samples to image, please be sure to bring them.

Workshops begin at 2:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon with the social hour beginning at 6:00 p.m. followed by our banquet at 7:00 p.m. Dr. McCrone’s banquet address will be an education in forgery.

Registration, workshop, and paper details are on pages 6 through 9. Since we are on a very tight schedule with this last minute mailing, it is strongly recommended that you pre-register by telephone, fax, or e-mail. Workshop locations and other details will be available at meeting check-in, beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday 18 March. (Editor’s Note: I do apologize for the tight schedule, but arranging the banquet and room details has been a tremendous task. Give Jeanne a word of thanks when you see her at the meeting.)

This spring meeting is an extremely important meeting for AREMS. We have had a long local meeting hiatus due to national opportunities and to some of our society’s own problems. A good meeting turnout says AREMS is a useful technical society and sends a message to our supporters; our corporate members, our vendors, MSA, and MAS; that AREMS is a good investment of our time, their time, and their financial support. AREMS will be a functioning entity only if the members participate. Poor meeting attendance sends a very loud message of non-participation.

Enough chastisement - attend the meeting! Thanks to Thom Hopen, Ken Culbreth, and Chuck Turnbill, the premier light microscopist of our time is coming to AREMS and speaking on topics that are of great interest to all people - money and sex. It just might not get any better than this! (Editor’s Note: It was mostly Thom.)

Where in the World is Tom Richards?
The following e-mail message was received from Tom Richards after forwarding his returned newsletter last summer.
From: "Richards, Tom" <TGR@FEICO.com
Date: 08/31/98 (Mon) 5:26pm
Subject: Oregon
Thanks for keeping me updated with AREMS .
I was hoping to get to MSA this summer, but the conflict with Semicon West kept me in SFO.
Next year the meeting will be in Portland, Oregon. I strongly suggest that anyone who attends make plans for a few days of vacation. The weather in the NW is spectacular in the summer (July 4th to Nov 1). The destinations to visit should be the coast, Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Crater Lake, and for those who like to golf a list of beautiful courses state wide is available.
All is well at FEI. We plan to have an event for MSA, maybe even plant tours.

Regards
Tom Richards

The President’s Message
March 1999

First, let me take this opportunity to thank the 1998 Board of Directors for all their help and hard work this past year. We decided early in 1998 to forgo the AREMSlocal meetings and concentrate our efforts on M&M’98 in Atlanta. This is much like pulling your train off onto a sidetrack to let the "Super Chief" fly past. After it has gone; however, we find that it is very difficult to get our train moving and back onto the proper track. There are those, such as the program committee for the spring meeting, who have put their shoulder to the wheel in order to move us forward. They deserve special accolades for these efforts.

I believe our AREMS Spring ’99 meeting, "Forensics and Microscopy", will be among our very best. Let me encourage each of you to make every possible effort to be there. Talk to the members of The 1999 Executive Committee. We invite your input, suggestions, and advice as to how we can make AREMSa better society as we head into the year 2000.

We are currently looking for members who would like to serve on the Executive Committee for the years 2000 and 2001. If you would like to serve, or if you are open to gentle "arm twisting", please communicate this to any of the committee members.

It is truly an honor to serve you as President for 1999. Let’s get together in South Carolina this Spring!

Chuck Turnbill, President

 1999 Executive Committee

The 1997-1998 Executive Committee has continued, by necessity, to hold office beyond the normal term. Although Ken did pass the "gavel" to Chuck by the end of the year, he has helped beyond the duties of the Past President, essentially giving us two society presidents through the end of an unusual 1998. Chuck has now taken over the reins and must have a new Executive Committee. You will find the ballot on page . Ballots should be returned to Rick McGill, our 1999 Secretary-Treasurer-elect, and must be received on or before Monday 5 April. However, remember the best way to vote is to come to the meeting in Spartanburg and put your ballot in the box.

Corporate Member Apology
Thom Hopen was entirely correct when he pointed out that MVA was not listed as an AREMS corporate member in the last newsletter. My sincerest apology to MVA and Thom. Still, I did not let my shame ( or total lack of shame) discourage me from encouraging Thom to be a major contributor to our Spring 99 meeting. Obviously, Thom is a fine fellow as demonstrated by his and MVA’s commitment to this meeting. MVA is definitely listed in this newsletter issue.

Rex Baird has done a tremendous job with our website. Please visit it sometime for much information, including meeting information.
