 AReMS Executive Committee Meeting

June 12th, 1999 at Fine Friends Restaurant, Asheville, NC

 Executive Committee members present:

Rick McGill, Rex Baird, Chuck Turnbill, Ken Culbreth, Jim Passmore, Paula Moore

 Report of Officers

 From the president…

It was reported that the spring ‘99 meeting was a success! The workshops, paper presentations, dinner, keynote speaker and facilities made a good impression on the meeting attendees; no disappointing comments were received!

Constructively speaking, the single improvement needed at the meeting was a better A/V and PA system for the keynote speaker. Some members found it difficult to hear the soft-spoken keynote speaker. Chuck Turnbill has committed to providing "professional" A/V equipment for future meetings. Additionally, the meeting was not well attended by "younger" members. Efforts will be made in the future to attract "future" Microscopists.

An MSA LAS (local affiliate society) grant-in-aid of $650 will be presented to AReMS for 1999, and paperwork is being filed for a similar grant in the upcoming year.

From the Secretary-Elect…(report from Stan Kunigelis)

Bank balance before Spring ’99 meeting………………….$2,076.00

Deposit following Spring ‘99 meeting……………………..$2,165.00

Plans are being considered for the Spring 2000 meeting with a tentative date in March and the current tentative locations are Kingsport, TN (Eastman) and Charlotte, NC (NCBI).

The Ted Willmarth Research Award was discussed at length. Currently, according to the Information for Applicant document, an applicant must make a "personal" application rather than being formally nominated to receive the award. Several members feel that this is a hindrance to the lack of interest in the award -other than monetary. It was agreed that a discussion would be held with Ted Willmarth to consider changing the application format. Additionally, Rex Baird will examine the AReMS web site document for correctness.

  Business decisions

New officer position created: Web Publications Officer.   Rex Baird was appointed.

Registration fees for meetings will be increased from $10 to $20.

In an attempt to compensate speakers and encourage student participation, the increase in revenue from fees will be used to provide speakers with free banquet and registration fees. Compensation will also come from grants received, if needed.

The office positions of President and Secretary/Treasurer will be for duration of 2 years. Some members and past officers felt that the 1-year term is to short because by the time the protocol is learned the term is over.

A proposal was made to extend the corporate members-at-large positions from 1 to 2 years. A decision is pending on further discussion with present officers.

  Other Business

Both Biological and Physical Members-At-Large will update their respective membership information list and return the info to the secretary/treasurer.

Rex Baird and Rick McGill will assemble all membership information into a web-based electronic database to facilitate information updates and retrieval.
