GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Founded in 1971, the Appalachian Consortium is a non-profit, educational organization comprised of institutions and agencies located in the Southern Highlands. Its purpose is to further the concerns of Appalachia and its people. The Appalachian Consortium operates with a salaried Executive Director, while the work of the Consortium is accomplished primarily through volunteers from the member institutions.
MISSION: Appalachian Consortium Press, which operates through the Consortium’s Editorial Board, seeks manuscripts related to the Appalachian region and its people, with an emphasis on Southern Appalachia. Ideally, the Press will publish at least one title per annum, with allowance for time and financial constraints in any given year.
CRITERIA: The Editorial Board of the Appalachian Consortium Press will review manuscripts of any genre, which are related by subject to the region of Appalachia. Only manuscripts of the highest quality will be accepted for publication. The Editorial Board seeks writing with scholarly research, unique perspective, or penetrating analysis to justify carrying the Consortium name.
PROCESS: To submit a manuscript to the Appalachian Consortium Press, the author should submit the work in two forms: 1) on IBM-compatible disk; and 2) two hard copies (typed and double-spaced-optional). Please do not send original art work or photographs, and retain a copy of the manuscript for your records, as NO MATERIALS WILL BE RETURNED, unless postage paid return envelopes are enclosed with submissions. If the manuscript passes the initial screening for consideration, it will be given to readers from the Editorial Board.
TIME: For publication, any manuscript must have a positive report from two readers and the majority approval from the entire Editorial Board. The chair of the committee will report in writing to the Consortium’s Executive Director, who will then: 1) seek approval for publication from the Board of Directors; and 2) report to the author the action of the Board. PLEASE ALLOW FROM 9-12 MONTHS FOR DECISION FROM THE CONSORTIUM.
NOTE FOR INTERNAL PROCESS. When the Executive Director receives a manuscript for consideration, he/she will forward two copies to the chair of the Editorial Board with a cover form, which will be used to track the date of receipt, readers to whom the manuscript goes, and any comments. In reporting the action of the Editorial Board to the Board of Directors, the chair will include justification for the action taken to be shared with the author.
